If you don’t know already, the MLS used to do penalty kicks a little different. As you’ll see in the video, it’s a lot like the loading screen we used to get in FIFA 09. You get the ball about 40 yards out and you run at the goalie trying to score.
Laugh at this all you want, but FIFA has already discussed adding this to the World Cup in 2026. Like our good friend Matthew McConaughey said in that crazy time and space movie, “sometimes you have to go backward to move forward.”
While scrolling through Twitter, I stumbled upon a tweet from USMNT Only that showed some of the best penalties from the ’90s.
Never forget MLS penalties in the 90's. 😂 pic.twitter.com/1tQDklMVoF

After watching this, how can you not think this is the best thing ever? Imagine a world where Zlatan is sprinting at a 40-year-old Tim Howard. Josef Martinez is trying to break the goal scoring record again this year and he’s running at goal trying to chip the goalie to make history.
The craziest thing about this video is when there’s a penalty kick inside a penalty kick. My mind was blown, that’s some next level soccer inception. If the Twitter video wasn’t enough, here’s a video of more MLS shootouts featuring some familiar faces such as Eric Wynalda, Tony Meola and Tab Ramos.
